Nick Matuszewski: W.A.V.E. - Gun Violence Prevention

As a presenter, my session ties directly into the theme We Are the Guardrails Now by highlighting how advocates, community leaders, and everyday people are stepping up to push for life-saving gun violence prevention policies in Wisconsin. With federal protections under constant threat, it's increasingly up to us to act as the guardrails that protect our communities.
 

Biography:
 

Nick Matuszewski is an attorney and advocate for gun violence prevention. He serves as Associate Executive Director of WAVE Educational Fund, Wisconsin's oldest and largest gun violence prevention organization, and leads the Wisconsin Community Violence Intervention Funding Coalition and the Wisconsin Gun Violence Prevention Coalition. A William & Mary Law School graduate, Nick is committed to creating a safer, equitable future for all.

Joseph DiZoglio: Patient Organizing for Reproductive Justice

 

Patient organizing is a model of healthcare activism that does not require non-profits or hospital approval. It has a long history of direct action to win concrete demands for communities. This presentation will describe a model of patient organizing and focus on potential winnable demands patients can work for in the state of Wisconsin for reproductive justice.

 

Biography:
Joey DiZoglio (pronounced dee-ZOL-ee-o) is a practicing gynecologist and community organizer. He was a City Year Americorps member in Dallas, Texas then attended Brown University’s medical school where he researched the history of racism and gynecology in Rhode Island and organized for an anti-racist curriculum. In Hartford, Connecticut he completed his medical training and worked as a tenant organizer with Connecticut’s chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). He is currently the Labor Chair of the Madison Area DSA and writes Marxist-themed science fiction and fantasy stories

Alan Minsky: A 21st Century Economic Bill of Rights

 

Alan has co-authored a series of articles with Prof. Harvey J Kaye, from University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, for a national 21st Century Economic Bill of Rights. On March 31, 2023, WI legislators introduced Assembly Joint Resolution 24 as follows: Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the time has come to renew the progressive tradition of Wisconsin through the Economic Justice Bill of Rights and in a 21st-century fashion.
 

Biography:

 

A lifelong activist, Alan worked as a progressive journalist for two decades before joining PDA full time in 2018. He was the Program Director at KPFK Los Angeles from 2009-2018; and the coordinator of Pacifica Radio’s national coverage of elections. Before that, Alan was one of the founders of LA Indymedia. He co-created the original podcasts for The Nation and Jacobin Magazine, as well as the Ralph Nader Radio Hour. His writing can be found at The Nation, Truthdig, Commondreams and other platforms.

Alan’s activism began in college with union solidarity work and opposition to US involvement in Central America. In the 1990s and early 2000s, Alan was active in the counter-globalization and media democracy movements. In 2011, he began organizing for Occupy Wall Street in the months leading up to the occupation of Zuccotti Park.

Alan is a committed anti-racist, feminist and LGBTQ+ rights advocate. He is also an advocate for economic policies that address social inequality, eradicate poverty, and prioritize the interests of working and middle-class households. Alan began working with PDA in 2014.

William Walter: Fighting Oligarchy Coalition
William is the Executive Director of Our Wisconsin Revolution. Having been elected as a Bernie Sanders National Delegate to the 2020 Democratic National Convention, William understands the necessity of an immediate and full-scale progressive revolution. While still in its infancy, the progressive movement is here and it’s growing quickly. Our Wisconsin Revolution will be the bridge between passion, ideas, and action, sitting at the forefront of this movement as we help turn passion into knowledge, knowledge into action, and action into change.
